James Sulzer, PhD is a Staff Scientist at MetroHealth Hospital and Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Sulzer received his PhD from Northwestern University and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in Mechanical Engineering, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, where he was an ETH fellow. His research centers on interventions and assessments in post-stroke Stiff-Knee gait, operant conditioning of neural activity, exoskeletal robotics, and tracking recovery after neurological injury.

Lindsay Karfeld-Sulzer, PhD is Chief Technology Officer at TeVido BioDevices. She received her PhD from Northwestern University in Chemical and Biological Engineering followed by a postdoc at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Her research and professional experience centers on regenerative medicine, tissue engineering and biomaterials. Specifically, she developed hydrogels for islet cell transplantation, created more effective MRI contrast agents, engineered growth factors and a delivery system for bone and intervertebral disc repair, explored vascularized soft tissue replacement and most recently developed a cell therapy for skin pigmentation disorders.

Both Lindsay and James are proud parents of three children, ages 3, 6 and 8. Liviana (Livie, 6) suffered a severe traumatic brain injury in May 2020 due to a falling tree branch in Austin, TX. Livie spent months in inpatient rehabilitation at Dell Children's Medical Center in Austin and Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore, followed by many more months of outpatient therapy at home and through home services, Dell Children's, and the NAPA Center Austin. Livie continues her therapy in Cleveland as she continues to make progress and loves to laugh and smile with her therapists.
