History of the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy

The Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy has a rich legacy of supporting the mission to improve health and quality of life in individuals with movement dysfunction due to neurologic health conditions. Through innovation and collaboration, the ANPT has accomplished many significant milestones related to clinical practice, research, education, and professional development. On this site explore the events and people who have helped to shape the ANPT over the years.

Neurology Report Editor in Chief Carolyn Crutchfield

From 1982-1983, Carolyn Crutchfield served as Neurology Report Editor in Chief. "Transitioned Neurology report from newsletter to journal format. In her own words: Carolyn Crutchfield: "Before I was the Chair or President, I held the position of Publications Chair. This is important to me because prior our communication was a mimeographed then Xeroxed Newsletter containing mostly Section information. My goal was to make this communication more like a journal. Of course, it was far from that, but at least it was a nascent one with a new format including a cover design, formal typesetting, and stapled binding. It contained research articles and such information along with Section business. When I became president, Marylou Barnes became the Editor and continued the development of the Neurology Report as we called it. When she became President, she recruited Patricia Leahy to run for the office and Patty really brought the journal to a factual life."

First Doctoral Scholarship Awarded

Carolyn Crutchfield: "MaryLou Barnes was a great visionary. When she was awarded the Mary McMillan Lectureship by the APTA she developed the concept of smaller groups supporting the development of individuals for faculty by funding one candidate at a time. She referred to this as the Adopt-a-Doc concept. She floated the idea among the Neurology Section leaders (Pam Duncan was president at the time) and the Neurology Section became the first to come forward with a scholarship and she announced their award during her address. Developed in her honor, they became the Marylou Barnes Adopt-a-Don Awards (ultimately split to include the Patty Leahy Scholarship) which are now awarded by the Foundation following their endowment by the Neurology Section."

APTA Specialist Certification- Governed by ABPTS: The "Description of Specialty Practice" is developed for each specialty area and outlines the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to clinical practice in that area. DSP content is based on a detailed practice analysis, which involves extensive research, including survey data and judgments of subject matter experts, of the knowledge, tasks, and roles that describe advanced specialty practice. The specialty council develops the written exam from the DSP and includes a percentage of questions from each of the major content areas identified in the practice analysis.
