Advancing Comprehensive Care for Motor Functional Neurological Disorders

Wednesday, February 22, 2023 8:00-5:00 at CSM in San Diego

Functional neurological disorder refers to a variety of symptoms that result from the function of the brain, as opposed to damage to the brain structure. It is the second most common reason patients seek neurology evaluation and accounts for at least 5%-10 % of neurology consultations in the outpatient setting. Patients with FND experience similar levels of disability to those with other neurological diseases and management of FND is a huge cost to the health care system. Physical therapist intervention has been identified as a first-line treatment for individuals with FND.  Despite published consensus recommendations in 2015, unique challenges remain in the comprehensive care of these patients.

This course will cover various diagnostic tools, clinical frameworks, and the application of neuroscience constructs combined with the consensus guidelines in order to optimize physical therapy care for these patients. A deeper dive exploring a team based approach including communication, treatment planning, and problem-solving will be emphasized through the addition of mental health and occupational therapy presenters. Challenges to physical therapy care including management of complex functional presentations and the role of the interdisciplinary team will be discussed through a combination of applied content and clinical cases.
