Swing into Action: Applying the Clinical Practice Guideline on Afo and Fes Poststroke into Practice

Wednesday, February 22, 2023 8:00-5:00 at CSM in San Diego

The Clinical Practice Guideline on the use of Ankle Foot Orthoses and Functional Electrical Stimulation for people with poststroke hemiplegia was published in 2021. In the development process, a survey of neurologic physical therapists who treat patients following a stroke was conducted to identify perceived needs related to CPG implementation, and education was identified as being important for successful implementation of a CPG. Educational needs included clinical decision making, differentiating different types of devices, effects on neuroplasticity and recovery, biomechanics of gait, intervention guidelines, and timing for introducing devices.

As knowledge is the first step in the knowledge-to-action process for clinical implementation, implementation cannot succeed without a strong knowledge base. Thus, the purpose of this course is to educate physical therapists in key areas important to the CPG and guide them through the process of clinical decision making using this knowledge while applying the CPG recommendations. Action items for moving from knowledge to clinical implementation will also be discussed. Future efforts should focus on later phases of the knowledge-to-action process including defining additional barriers, developing implementation interventions, monitoring how knowledge is used, evaluating outcomes, and creating efforts to sustain knowledge use.
