Rachel Wellons, PT, DPT, Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy

Meet the Chair of the ANPT Vestibular Special Interest Group

Headshot Wellons

Rachel says she is biased as current Vestibular SIG chair feeling that the SIG’s of ANPT provide a great opportunity for members to be involved.   With the ANPT being such a big organization and a bit intimidating to find where you fit in, “the SIG’s allow you to be a big fish in a small pond and provide a great way of getting your feet wet as a volunteer with the ANPT (pun intended).”  She has enjoyed interacting with “like-minded” professionals with 10 year involvement in the Vestibular SIG and ANPT.  These professionals are “PT’s passionate about high quality evidence-based supported patient care” and many are her friends as well.

Professionally she works at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans in Academic Post Secondary  as an Associate Professor on the Clinical Track.  Her teaching includes the neuro-rehabilitation courses, a professionalism course, and prosthetics and orthotics.  Rachel still treats about 6-7 patients per week, focusing on Vestibular Disorders or other neurologic deficits impairing balance and gait.  Also, she is active with research focusing on Vestibular Rehabilitation interventions, outcome measures, or factors which would impact care.

She’s not the only therapist in her family- her dog Bailey is a pet therapist who volunteers with the New Orleans Visiting Pet Program.

Bailey VPP

Outside of work, she enjoys being outdoors, travel, scuba diving and cooking.
