Heather Hayes, DPT, PhD, CSRS, CEEAA Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy

Meet the Chair of ANPT Stroke Special Interest Group

Heather Hayes-small

Heather is a faculty member at the University of Utah with a recent transition from clinical practice into a full-time research track.  Her research is currently focused on the cost-effectiveness and the decision making for post-acute care placement for individuals post stroke.

This focus is fitting for the current Chair of the Stroke SIG.  She has had a passion for stroke rehabilitation since DPT school.  Her passion for Neurologic rehabilitation was “stoked because of amazing mentors who showed me what the brain is capable of and how much we as PT’s can do to help patients post-stroke.”  She has worked to advance the Neuro PT profession with involvement in local, state and national level.  Heather has been a member of the ANPT since 2003.

As current Stroke SIG chair, she states she has learned a lot and describes the experience as fun.  Her goal with this position is to “pay it forward and to educate clinicians…help them find their passion and help them find a way to get involved”.

Ways she shares her expertise and passion include:

-fun events to get her patients to participate and utilize their mobility – National Dance Day with her patients featured on this clip from “So you think you can dance”:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kI3Ao5OK6mE

-American Stroke Association patient involvement in their Saving Strokes Program- a day golf program.
