Neurologic Residency

A residency is a planned program of postprofessional clinical and didactic education that is designed to advance significantly the physical therapist's preparation as a provider of patient care services in a the area of neurolgic clinical practice. Currently, there are six neurologic physical therapy residencies:

 

Centers for Rehab Services Physical Therapy Neurological Residency Program

Residency Description

The Centers for Rehab Services Neurological Residency Program has a long history of commitment to post-professional education and currently offers a program designed to improve a therapist's knowledge and treatment skills involving neurologically impaired individuals. The program was accredited by the APTA in November of 2008.

The Mission of Center for Rehab Services is to advance the competent physical therapist through education, research and professional service into a board certified clinical specialist in the area of neurologic physical therapy - emphasizing the development of psychomotor skills, scientific knowledge base and clinical reasoning to enhance the resident's ability to manage individuals with neurologic impairments. This program will enable the physical therapist to gain the skills necessary to be a resource to other physical therapists, the medical team, and the community.

Our 15 month curriculum, of which the resident will receive tuition benefits to participate in a didactic education culminating in an advanced master's degree in neurology, a minimum of 4 hours per week of one-on-one mentoring with a therapist identified as a specialist in their field, a multitude of specialty observation opportunities as well as valuable clinical experience. Concurrent with the residency, the resident is employed by Centers for Rehab Services part-time for 20 hours per week while receiving full time benefits and earning a competitive salary commensurate with an entry-level therapist.

Upon successful completion of the residency program, the residents are adequately prepared and qualified to sit for the Physical Therapy Neurologic Specialist Certification (NCS) Examination made by the APTBS.

Kaiser Permanente Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency

Residency Description

This is one year-long Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California begins in June. The program features a combination of didactic classes, 1:1 supervision and mentoring, clinical rounds, independent study modules, and community service. Advanced training in both adult and pediatric Neurologic Physical Therapy is a part of the curriculum. Taught by recognized experts and APTA Board Certified specialists in Neurologic PT, you will acquire the advanced clinical skills required to treat and manage patients with complex neurological diagnoses. Our graduates reach new levels of job satisfaction and leadership in the Neurologic Physical Therapy field. Completion of the program allows you to become qualified to sit for the American Board of Physical Therapy specialty examination in Neurologic Physical Therapy to become a board-certified clinical specialist.

Moss Rehab Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program

 Residency Description

The MossRehab Neurological Residency Program for Physical Therapists is designed to educate and train practicing physical therapists toward becoming board certified neurological clinical specialists and leaders in the treatment of individuals with neurologic impairments. The program at MossRehab is the first of its kind in the nation to receive accreditation from the American Physical Therapy Association and recently received re-credentialing status as of January 2009.

The Mission of MossRehab's Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program is to provide practicing physical therapists an advanced level of clinical training, which will enable them to take a leadership role in the treatment of individuals with neurologic impairments. This program will create an accomplished patient-care provider, a resource for physical therapists and those in the community, a contributor to evidence-based practice and a consumer of the scientific literature.

The unique 50-week curriculum, offered at no cost to the participant, includes more than 1,500 hours of combined classroom/lab instruction, mentored treatment sessions, clinical practice, and specialty practice observation. During the residency, participants are employed by MossRehab, a leading provider of physical medicine and rehabilitation services in the Philadelphia area, making them eligible for employee healthcare benefits and compensation for providing patient care on an as-needed basis. Upon completion of the program, residents are well prepared to sit for the Neurologic Physical Therapy Specialist Certification Examination.

The residency program is limited to two therapists each year. Candidates must submit a completed application, resume and registration fee for consideration. The residency begins in July of each year.

TIRR Memorial Hermann Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program

Residency Description

The Therapy Services Department at TIRR Memorial Hermann is excited to announce the TIRR Memorial Hermann Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program in collaboration with Texas Woman's University and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. This collaborative effort provides licensed physical therapists the ability to enhance their clinical and professional skills, while working with clinical experts in the area of neurologic physical therapy and academicians of two major educational institutions.

The mission of the TIRR Memorial Hermann Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program is to provide evidence-based, post-professional education in neurologic physical therapy and to develop expert clinicians who utilize cutting edge interventions, compassion, and interdisciplinary collaboration to achieve the best clinical outcomes. This mission is accomplished by basing the program in the foundational sciences and allowing the residents the opportunity to experience the full continuum of care.

Residents participate in a variety of clinical and didactic experiences across the lifespan and continuum of care during this 50 week residency program. The clinical sites will allow the resident to practice physical therapy across the continuum of care and lifespan while working with patients with neurologic dysfunction.

The Ohio State University Medical Center Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program

Residency Description


The Ohio State University (OSU) Medical Center Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program offers high quality clinical, educational, and research opportunities to prepare physical therapists to become board certified neurologic specialists through its partnership with the OSU Division of Physical Therapy.  The mission of the program is to graduate practitioners with advanced knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors that will shape the future of neurologic physical therapy through research, education and patient care.

This one-year program starts in September and includes the following: 27 hours per week of non-mentored clinical practice, 3 hours per week of mentored clinical practice, 3-4 hours in resident/physician conferences and/or didactic coursework, 4-8 hours teaching in neuroscience and neurorehabilitation courses, and 4 hours attending specialty clinics or shadowing physicians. Residents have the unique opportunity to treat patients with diverse neurologic diagnoses across the acute, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient settings.  Each resident spends time working in the NeuroRecovery Network (NRN) that provides state-of-the art rehabilitation for individuals with spinal cord injury at Dodd Hall, a nationally-ranked rehabilitation center. Residents also participate in clinical research and complete a case study during their residency year.

University of Southern California/Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center

Residency Description

The University of Southern California/Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center (USC/RLANRC) Clinical Residency Program in Neurologic Physical Therapy is for practicing physical therapists looking to enhance their clinical and professional skills. This program combines the academic resources of a superior physical therapy educational and research institution with the prominent history and clinical expertise of one of the leading national rehabilitation centers. The mission of the program is to graduate advanced practitioners of neurologic physical therapy who will express their education through excellence in the practice and teaching of clinical skills, who will continue to expand the body of knowledge in their specialty by conducting and publishing clinical research and who will make a lasting contribution to their local and professional community.

Residents start in August and spend one full year in the program which includes the following: 20 hours per week of non-mentored clinical practice, 4 hours per week of mentored clinical practice, 3-4 hours in didactic coursework, 4-8 hours teaching in entry level coursework and 4 hours within physician clinic. Additionally each resident completes a scholarly project during their residency year.
