April P. Fajardo, PT, DPT

2016 Recipient of the Early Career Professional Award

Dr. Fajardo is a travel PT who recently completed an assignment at St. Mary's Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility in Tucson, AZ. While working there, she has been able to advance her skills in neurologic physical therapy, especially patients with CVA. She also enjoyed working in this particular community because of its diverse nature, due to its location near Native American Reservations, a substantial Spanish-speaking community, and a large number of seasonal residents who spend their winters in Arizona.

In addition to preparing for her vision of sitting for the NCS exam over the next few years, she has also developed a passion for providing rehabilitation on a global stage. In the past, she has served on 7 medical mission trips where she has worked with local organizations to provide resources and education for local clinicians and caregivers.  She recently left for her next global expedition where she will again collaborate with local clinics while providing physical therapy. "If you're interested in following my journey," she states,"please follow along my blog www.thevagabondingDPT.org."

While advancing her career with her global pursuits, she has also maintained an active role in the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy. Since 2013, she has served on the Membership and Public Relations Committee. She initially worked on the Mentorship Subcommittee to revamp the program by screening active mentors/mentees, helped develop the website, and presented a poster on the comittee's findings at the 2015 NEXT Conference. She also presented a systematic review, "What level of intensity of aerobic exercise produces the largest change in BDNF serum levels in human subjects?" at the 2015 NEXT Conference, prompted by her interest in the topic of Brain-derived Neurotropic Factor. She now serves as the Internal Public Relations subcomittee chair, managing the marketing and social media for the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy.

Dr. Fajardo encourages clinicians to continue to pursue their passion for providing high quality care to their patients: "At every stage of our career, we have the opportunity to learn from others.  As an early career professional, I am a firm believer that learning does not end with formal education; rather, true learning begins with innate curiosity and the relentless pursuit of answers to those questions."

She would like to direct clinicians to the recently released Synapse Learning Center, the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy's online learning module system. This can be accessed at www.anptsynapsecenter.com. She also directs clinicians to the APTA's Clinical Practice Guideline database at http://www.apta.org/EvidenceResearch/EBPTools/CPGs/.

She would like to direct health care consumers to the APTA's Move Forward PT website: http://www.moveforwardpt.com/SymptomsConditions.aspx
